Bill Lynch of Summerville, SC sent us this e-mail on October 25, 2005 about "The 1250 Club"...
Just wanted to know if you could share any info on the 1250 Club? I would have to believe it was a promotion of WTMA back in the late 1940s. In February of 1948 I was diagnosed with a life threatening illness. For the first few months I was confined to the second floor of St. Francis Hospital. The local medical community could offer very little hope for my long term survival and eventually I was transferred to Duke University Hospital. Well now it's fifty-seven years later and I have recently come across a large number of get well cards from those dark days. A number of which speak of hearing about my illness on the 1250 Club. I was only five at the time so I do not remember a lot about the goings on, but I do remember something about a radio station doing a story about my illness. I seem to recall perhaps an actual broadcast taking place from my room at St. Francis. A large portion of the treatments I was receiving in Charleston called for numerous blood transfusions and that may have been the impetus for WTMA to become involved. On top of my illness, my blood type is AB+, which limited the potential donors. Just wanted to let you know that after all these years I know why my car radios have always had a button programmed to 1250.
Does anybody have any information to share about this WTMA feature? Thanks!
